South-western Uganda

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a dense, misty rainforest in south-western Uganda and home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. Trekking here is the highlight of most Uganda itineraries: a guided walk through steep, forested hills to spend an hour with a habituated gorilla family.

Best time: June to September and December to February are generally the drier trekking months.

Western Uganda

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park spreads across savannah, crater lakes and wetlands in western Uganda. It is known for the tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector, elephants and buffalo along the Kazinga Channel, and one of the richest bird lists in Africa.

Best time: Game viewing is easiest in the drier months of June to September and December to February.

Northern Uganda

Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda's largest national park, split by the Victoria Nile. At its heart the river is forced through a gorge just seven metres wide before crashing into the valley below. Game drives on the northern bank, a boat cruise to the base of the falls and a delta cruise in search of the shoebill make this a complete safari destination.

Best time: June to September and December to February are generally the drier periods.

Western Uganda

Kibale Forest National Park

Kibale Forest National Park protects a tall tropical rainforest with one of the highest primate densities in Africa. Chimpanzee tracking is the main draw, usually paired with a guided walk through the neighbouring Bigodi Swamp for monkeys and birdlife.

Best time: Tracking runs year-round; forest trails are firmest from June to September and December to February.

South-western Uganda

Lake Bunyonyi

A deep, island-dotted lake ringed by steeply terraced hills, Lake Bunyonyi is the classic place to slow down after gorilla trekking. Twenty-nine islands, dugout canoeing, lakeside lodges and welcoming cultural villages make it one of Uganda's most relaxing corners.

Best time: Pleasant year-round; clearest skies fall in the drier months.

Eastern Uganda

Jinja and the Source of the Nile

Jinja sits where the River Nile begins its journey out of Lake Victoria, and it is Uganda's adventure capital. Grade 5 white-water rafting, bungee jumping over the river, kayaking and quad biking sit alongside calm boat trips to the source itself.

Best time: Adventure activities run all year, weather permitting.

Central Uganda

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where you can see rhinos in the wild, tracked on foot with experienced rangers. It sits on the road north and makes a natural first stop on the way to Murchison Falls.

Best time: Open year-round; mornings are the most comfortable for walking.

Western Uganda

Lake Mburo National Park

The closest savannah park to Kampala, Lake Mburo is compact and easy to explore. Zebra, impala, eland and giraffe are common, and because there are no elephants here you can enjoy guided walking safaris, horseback rides and boat trips on the lake.

Best time: Good year-round; wildlife concentrates near the lake in the drier months.

Lake Victoria, central Uganda

Ssese Islands, Lake Victoria

An archipelago in Lake Victoria with sandy beaches, forested interiors and fishing villages. The Ssese Islands are where Ugandan itineraries wind down: swimming, fishing trips, quiet walks and long evenings by the water.

Best time: Best in the drier months, when lake crossings are calmest.

Central Uganda

Kampala City

Uganda's capital spreads across green hills and is the cultural heart of the country. The Kasubi Tombs, the Uganda Museum, the Gaddafi National Mosque, the Baha'i Temple, Ndere cultural performances and the sprawling Owino market all sit within a day or two of exploring.

Best time: A year-round city break, easily combined with any safari.
