Uganda travel guide
Everything worth knowing before you plan a safari in the Pearl of Africa.
Landlocked in East Africa, Uganda is famous for its incredible biodiversity, friendly people and the source of the River Nile. From tracking mountain gorillas in misty rainforests to game drives on the savannah and white-water rafting on the Nile, Uganda offers adventure, wildlife and culture in one compact country — few places let you combine the Big Five with gorillas and chimpanzees on a single trip.
Best time to visit Uganda
Drier periods
June to September and December to February are generally the drier periods, with firmer trekking trails and easier game viewing.
Wetter, greener periods
March to May and October to November are generally the wetter, greener periods: fewer crowds, lush scenery and excellent birding and photography.
Weather patterns can vary from year to year, so treat these as general guidance rather than a guarantee.
Gorilla permits for the drier months often sell out several months in advance — book early.
Things to do in Uganda
Gorilla trekking
Trek in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and spend one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. A moderate level of fitness is required.
Chimpanzee tracking
Kibale Forest National Park is one of the best places in Africa to track wild chimpanzees, usually combined with the Bigodi Swamp walk.
Wildlife game drives
Look for lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalo and leopards in Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth and Lake Mburo national parks.
Boat cruises
Cruise the Kazinga Channel, the Nile at Murchison Falls and the waters of Lake Victoria for close-up wildlife and birdlife.
Cultural experiences
Meet Batwa communities, join village walks and enjoy evenings of Ugandan drumming and dance.
Birdwatching
Uganda records more than 1,080 bird species, including the sought-after shoebill.
Hiking
Hike Sipi Falls on the slopes of Mount Elgon or take on the Rwenzori Mountains, the 'Mountains of the Moon'.
Jinja adventure activities
Grade 5 white-water rafting on the Nile, bungee jumping, kayaking, quad biking and ziplining.
Travel planning tips
- Book gorilla and chimpanzee permits as early as possible — availability is limited and demand is high in the drier months.
- Pack layers, sturdy walking boots, a light rain jacket and insect repellent, whatever the season.
- Distances between parks are long; allow travel days in your itinerary rather than rushing.
- Gorilla trekking requires moderate fitness — tell us about any mobility concerns when you enquire.
- Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for every traveller.
